this thesis thing.. th th th..

May 15, 2011 2 comments

Warning: terribly boring content. Scratches from the final part of my thesis. (although there is still a lot to complete in the earlier parts)

My thesis subject has evolved and evolved and evolved and ended up being protest vote and non-voting. Non-voting is self-evident. Protest vote is voting for radical parties on either edges of political spectrum. In the dutch case, it is PVV on the right, and the SP on the left.

Now, I am looking at the relationship between representation of social classes by political parties and electoral behavior. Representation here is a very simple one. Measured just with the presence of MP candidates from different social classes in political parties.

Secondly, I focus on the cynical attitudes of voters about the political system and politicians. And pose the question whether the relation between representation and electoral behavior is mediated through cynical attitudes.

To put differently, if one social class is not well represented by mainstream political parties, the people of this class may become more cynical and in the elections they may vote for the radical parties (PVV or SP).

Results of many statistical analyses are in line with my expectations. (Yayy, for me!)

Yes, people are more cynical if there are few MP candidates from their social classes in mainstream political parties. And they have a greater tendency to vote for PVV or the SP or even for abstention (non-voting).

to be continued..

good news in stressful times

Just read on a facebook page that shaikh Mouaz al Khatib has been released this morning. He was arrested many days ago (10 maybe?) by the secret police in Damascus, and nobody knew where he was. Finally, good news came..

PS: I was writing something about him, but I didn’t have enough time to complete that draft. Maybe later. I gotta finish my thesis first..

PS2: I am sooooo stressed and depressed out of this thesis thing. :S

nobody speaks out for Syrians

I am not gonna write a lot.. just put a quote from a German pastor (Martin Niemöller) from the time of World War II:

“First they came for the communists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.”

terrible things are happening in Syria, people are being shot dead randomly on the streets. personally i do not approve the spread of those kinds of images of violence.. now, i see it seems necessary, otherwise we continue thinking that everything is okay with Syria, they have their dictators for ages..

this blog is not always about dutch politics..

one of my favorite duaas from Quran

“(Moses) said: “O my Lord! Expand me my breast;”, “Ease my task for me;”, “And remove the impediment from my speech.”, “So they may understand what I say” “, Ta-ha 25-28.

Nowadays I have to finish my thesis.. One week left. But, my mind is terribly busy with many other things, except from the thesis. Many things.. Happenings in Syria, arrest of Shaikh Mouaz, our Palestinian Awareness week plans, arranging a Dom Tower tour for my students in the mosque, financing the trip, finding a guest and a guide, motivating students to raise their own funds, also extending my residence permit, calling the IND for relevant documents, my unwritten paper from last year, arranging a flight to Istanbul, visiting the kosher bakery I recently heard about, thesis defense, graduation, the academics meeting, where I promised to present my thesis in Turkish, some translations I promised to do few months ago.. And some other things I do not want to write here..

OMG!.. That’s seriously too much!

“O my Lord! Expand me my breast!”
